Rock It !

Rock culture is a major inspiration for many designers and is even more pronounced when it comes to fashion.

Scandinavian art directon duo Sandberg & Timonen are amongst those for whom rock is a life’s Original Soundtrack, and with the “LIVE ALIVE” exhibition in Paris Brachfeld Gallery they created a series of limited edition concert tour t-shirts paying tribute to a selection of iconic fashion designers.

A charming conversation with Johann Sandberg ( half of the creative duo ) gave me some insights on the core of this project. Rock T-shirt is something that Sandberg&Timonen are already familiar with: a few years back they edited a Tom Ford rock T-shirt. For this project, from which all benefits will go towards reilef for Haiti, they behaved as fans, with a hint of teenager’s escapism, not trying to analyse or criticize designers in any ways.

Well, Sandberg admitted they ‘ve been tempted to while doing Maison Martin Margiela’s T-shirt, thinking of putting Renzo Rosso’s face on, but as “no one would want to wear that” they took a step back and used a fantastic picture taken from an Arena Homme + MMM special editorial by Willy Vanderperre and Olivier Rizzo. The big names are all there including Sonia Rykiel, Rick Owens, Haider Ackermann, Raf Simons, Christopher Kane, Marc Jacobs, and of course Mr Elbaz and Miss Prada are part of the selection. Still, I felt like one of fashion’s unavoidable names was missing: Karl Lagerfeld. When asked why was he not featured, Sandberg responded with a “No comment”, did we really need another t-shirt with the Kaiser’s face on it ?

The exhibition is on till the 28th of February at Brachfeld Gallery, 78 rue des Archives, Paris 3.
All t–shirts are created in a limited series 8. All proceeds will benefit Medecins Sans FrontiĆ©res and their efforts in Haiti.
