In the latest issue of Blackbook Magazine director Mary Herron speaks about her films, actors and inspirations. In the interview she mentions that Christian Bales inspiration for his character in American Psycho, Patrick Bateman was Tom Cruise. Mr Bale had been watching a Letterman with Tom Cruise and had noticed this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes.
I think it's quite interesting that an actor in hollywood bases his character around the personality of a fellow actor in the same field. Before the time of American Psycho I don't recall Tom Cruise ever played a bad guy. After Stanley Kubricks last film, the divorce from Nicole Kidman and the crazy appearances on Oprah I believe Tom Cruise fell into the right kind of material as an actor. Collateral from 2004 is a great example of the kind of roles Mr Cruise should be doing considering his personality.
